Approximately 60 kids were spooked late yesterday afternoon when the Pierpont/Moore residence cluster of Southwest dormitory hosted the West Springfield Boys and Girls Club for some Halloween fun.
This was the second year that this event has taken place. Each room in the two residence halls paid $5 to become a “trick or treat room,” and then decorated its respective hallways Monday night. The children were escorted by costumed resident assistants and community leaders around both buildings, where they gathered candy.
“This year”s structure was similar to last year”s,” said Assistant Resident Director Kelly Gray. “But this year we had more student involvement and a better idea of how we wanted to execute things which made the process less difficult.”
Last year, 70 rooms participated in the event, while this year participation was up to 120 rooms.
Residents of the cluster spent much of Monday night decorating their hallways with a wide array of decorations. Black paper tombstones covered the walls, masking tape outlines covered the floors, and costumed residents played Halloween music inside their rooms while the kids went around cautiously through the dark hallways.
“We spent five hours decorating our hallway last night,” said freshmen Julie Martinez, Lisa Berggren, Julie Martinez, and Lauren Campbell as they stood outside their decorated room.
After the children were done going through both buildings gathering candy, they were escorted to the lounge in Pierpont, which had been transformed from a TV lounge into a Halloween atmosphere.
