Canadiens beat struggling Bruins

MONTREAL (AP) – Mike Ribeiro, Niklas Sundstrom and Jan Bulis scored and Mathieu Garon made 42 saves in his second straight start to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

Ribeiro opened the scoring 6:27 into the second when he tipped a shot past goalie Jeff Hackett, who made his first appearance in Montreal since he was sent to Boston as part of a three-team deal that saw the Canadiens acquire Sundstrom from San Jose.

Sundstrom scored his fourth goal in nine games with Montreal at 18:19 of the second to send the Canadiens to their second straight win following a four-game losing streak.

Bruins defenseman Don Sweeney scored his first of the season 2:25 into the third, the only goal Garon has allowed in Montreal’s two straight wins.

Bulis closed out the scoring with 1:30 left.

Garon, who dressed but did not play in seven games after he was recalled from Hamilton of the AHL following the Hackett trade, stopped all 25 shots he faced in a 2-0 win in Washington on Sunday.

Boston lost its second straight and has just one win in five games (1-3-0-1). All-Star right wing Glen Murray had 10 of Boston’s 43 shots, including four each in the first and third periods.

As the Canadiens were being outshot 11-5 in the first, Garon got a loud ovation from the soldout crowd of 21,273 after he did the splits and stretched out his glove hand to stop Murray’s backhand shot on a breakaway 13 minutes in.

Montreal opened the scoring 6:27 into the second when Ribeiro tipped defenseman Andrei Markov’s point shot in mid-air and redirected it past Hackett.

Sundstrom, who had just two goals in 47 games with San Jose, got his sixth of the season when he backhanded a shot past Hackett with 1:41 left in the period.

Sweeney scored his first goal in 47 games this season to draw the Bruins to within one early in the third.

Late in the game, Garon stopped Murray’s shot from the slot with just over two minutes left. Bulis put the game away with his 12th goal at 18:30.
