Small fire extinguished in Sylvan

A fire broke out in Cashin dorm in Sylvan living area Sunday night. According to Patrick Archbald, deputy chief of the University of Massachusetts police department, the UMPD received the initial call at 9 p.m. reporting a pulled fire alarm.

Officers arrived on the scene at 9:04 p.m. and reported flames coming from the building’s lobby window on the south side. The Amherst Fire Department also responded to the call.

An Amherst firefighter reached the lobby to find a burning 10- by six-inch plexie-glass strip stuck to a cement wall. The fire was extinguished with a portable fire extinguisher.

“The extinguishing probably took less than 30 seconds,” said Archbald.

Also, a two- by six-foot glass window above the flames was damaged.

“We’ve spoken with several local residents. We don’t have a suspect. We have no information as to how [the fire] started. Nothing in the building would indicate why it started,” said Archbald.

According to Archbald, the objects may have been lit on fire. The damage to the building totaled $250.
