Thousands of fans. Two of the best teams in Hockey East. National attention. Implications for the rest of the season.

Tonight, the No. 13 Massachusetts hockey team hosts No. 1 Boston College (21-3-4, 12-1-3 Hockey East) in the first of a home-and-home set, and while there are still five more games after the affair at the Mullins Center (7 p.m.), it might as well be playoff time.

From the “white out” promotion, that will likely fill the student side of the arena with white T-shirts and leave few empty seats on the cushy side, to the fact that it could mean first place in the conference, to the home-ice advantage that’s on the line for one team, the game is one of the bigger events to hit Amherst in quite a while.

The Minutemen (16-6-5, 12-4-2 HEA) feel it too.
