Minutemen drop two on west coast

The Massachusetts men’s soccer team will return home from last week’s turbulent stint on the West Coast to host Maine at 1 p.m. Saturday, in its home opener.

After defeating the University of Montreal by a score of 3-0 and resulting in a draw with Notre Dame (0-0) during preseason matches, UMass’ record dropped to 0-2 after facing potent offenses at San Francisco’s annual Diadora Classic.

While at the tournament, UMass suffered consecutive losses at the hands of fifth ranked Santa Clara and the hosting San Francisco Dons.

On the first day of competition, Santa Clara jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and managed to fend off 15 Massachusetts shots to preserve the shutout. Sophomore Nick Billman of UMass tallied seven saves on the day, but had no answer for a swarming Bronco offense, which scored all its goals less than 10 yards from the net.

Santa Clara got on the board just 2:59 into the game, when Peter Lowry scored, assisted by Medhi Ballouchy. Ballouchy went on to score a goal of his own less than three minutes later, off of a free kick set up by a Massachusetts penalty.

In the second round of play, Santa Clara went on to defeat UC Davis by a score of 4-1, and claim the Diadora crown.

It wasn’t until UMass Freshman Tyler Pagano netted the first goal of his collegiate career against San Francisco, that the Maroon and White had something to cheer about. Down 2-0, Pagano maneuvered around the defense and scored on a turnaround shot deep in Don territory.

Pagano’s goal cut the deficit in half at 71:44, but San Francisco capped off the scoring two minutes later with a goal from Aaron Chandler.

UMass goalie Colin Burns recorded six saves in the loss, while his counterpart, Geremy Uhl, responded with five.

During the Aug. 28 exhibition between UMass and Notre Dame, Burns and Billman split time between the pipes and kept the game scoreless with two saves apiece. Ninth-ranked Notre Dame fluttered against a cohesive UMass defense, managing to put only six shots on goal.

A week prior to Notre Dame, Massachusetts showcased its abilities in victory over the University of Montreal. Fueled by a pair of second half goals from junior Oral Bullen, the Maroon and White surged after a first half stalemate.

Bullen’s two goals came in the final 13 minutes of play, leading the Minutemen to their only victory thus far.

Freshman Gred Cirillo sparked the offense when he kicked home an assist from teammate Kenneth Cook early in the second half. Cook gained control of a loose ball during a melee in front of the Montreal goal and sent a pass in Bullen’s direction.

Blocked from seeing the shot by players scrambling to get back into position, the Montreal goalkeeper did not have time to react to Cirillo’s shot that made its way through the unintentional screen.

The Minutemen return to Rudd Field Saturday, where they have played to a 12-3-2 record since 2002.
