Driver rescued after car ends up in bay

BOSTON (AP) – A car that missed a turn plunged into the frigid waters of Dorchester Bay, and a passer-by and a police officer helped the driver swim ashore after she escaped from her sinking vehicle.

Sheila Bellevue, 24, of Norwood was listed in serious condition Wednesday at Boston Medical Center.

She was cited by the University of Massachusetts at Boston campus police for a host of charges, including driving under the influence, speeding and failure to stop for a police officer.

A witness reported seeing the car traveling at high speed Tuesday afternoon before it missed a tight turn near campus. The car was airborne before it hit the water about 30 yards offshore.

Bellevue escaped from the car and swam toward shore while a UMass-Boston student and a campus police officer swam out to help her.

State Police divers spent much of Tuesday afternoon searching the murky waters for the car and removing it. The accident remained under investigation.
