Dear editor:
This is a request to the student body and the faculty of UMass. Twice now I have heard students in classes refer to non-white populations as “colored people.” This has been an unacceptable and offensive term for my entire life time, and certainly before then. I do not understand why some of my professors allow this term to be said without it going unacknowledged. Although confrontation on this matter produces tension, it is better to correct an individual than to let him or her continue to speak inappropriately. Please, refrain from using this term, and correct someone when it is said aloud. This is something that we should all care about.
