No. 3 Maryland drop UMass

A three-goal effort from junior attack Kaytlin McCormick wasn’t enough to lift the Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team past No. 3 Maryland on Saturday, as the Minutewomen fell, 18-7, at McGuirk Stadium.

UMass coach Alexis Venechanos, who graduated from Maryland, saw four Terrapin players score three or more goals against her team in the loss. Maryland out-shot the Minutewomen, 40-to-15.

The starting midfielders for the Terrapins fueled the attack for Maryland (1-0).

The Minutewomen (1-1) couldn’t find an answer for the offensive clinic that Maryland midfielder Kelly Kasper put on all game. Kasper notched seven points on six goals and one assist.

Sophomore midfielder Caitlyn McFadden and senior midfielder Dana Dobbie had the second-highest point totals for Maryland, as each player had five points. Dobbie and McFadden scored the first and second goals of the game, respectively.

Merritt Cosgrove broke Maryland’s string of goals late in the first half, as the sophomore midfielder for the Minutewomen scored the team’s first goal of the game.

The Terrapins then scored three straight goals. Midway through the first half, Kasper scored her first two goals of the game.

Senior attack Kathleen Typadis broke Maryland’s streak of three-straight goals with a goal of her own to make the score 5-2. Typadis was limited to just one point in the game on four shots (two on goal). The key contributor for the Minutewomen was McCormick. Of her seven shots, six were on-goal.

Other than McCormick, the Minutewomen spread the ball around well. Four other Minutewomen found the back of the net on the day, including Typadis. Typadis’ score extended her streak to 43 straight games with a goal.

McFadden was a ball-hawk for Maryland, leading the team in ground balls with four. She also penetrated the defense very well, having eight shots-on-goal.

The first half came to a close but not before the Terrapins notched two more goals, making the score 7-2.

Less than a minute into the second half, Maryland struck again. Roughly two minutes into the quarter, the Maroon and White answered back, as junior attack Julie Pasquantonio found the back of the net, making the score 8-3.

McFadden and Dobbie then concluded each of their two-goal performances; first McFadden scored unassisted and then Dobbie scored off of the feed from Kasper.

The Maryland defense stifled the Minutewomen. The Terrapins forced double-digit turnovers in both periods of play.

The Minutewomen also gave up 10 free-position shots, three of which led to goals in the second half.

Although UMass spread the ball around to the open player, its two assists, compared to Maryland’s eight, let the Terrapins go after individual players on the offensive side of the ball.

In comparison to its win over Holy Cross this past Tuesday, the Minutewomen committed 10 more turnovers against Maryland.

On the defensive side of the ball, the lopsided margin in shots taken showed the ease with which Maryland picked apart the UMass defense. Against the Crusaders, the Minutewomen allowed just 12.

After the two teams traded scores twice more, Maryland scored five unanswered goals to seal the victory.

Next, the Minutewomen will host No. 18 Boston University on Wednesday.
