Sophomore Libby Protzman runs for student trustee

Sophomore Libby Protzman is in the race for student trustee at the University of Massachusetts with her running mate Derek Khanna – a candidate for SGA president.

Protzman is a legal studies major and currently holds the position of commuter senator. She is involved in a multitude of on and off-campus activities, ranging from being a member of the Massachusetts Amherst Democrats to a sister of the Chi Omega sorority.

In the past, Protzman has worked with the Sylvan Area Government, helped the Brown, McNamara and Cashin House councils, and been a part of the Public Policy and Relations Committee.

Protzman’s desire for the position developed from former student trustee Mishy Lieblum, who she felt had a large amount of influence over the SGA, as well as on the campus.

“I want to make change and make a difference using this influence,” said Protzman. “I know many of the trustees currently on board and I want to work cooperatively with them to make UMass Amherst safer, more diverse and a more affordable place for every undergraduate and graduate student.”

The job of trustee includes serving as the voice and delegate for students’ interests. Protzman plans to organize students to rally behind their cause – not just that of one person or a political party. She believes this can be achieved by keeping constant liaison with the student body to ensure everyone is updated on current campus issues.

Protzman feels that the strongest point of their campaign is their ability to relate to every student.

“We want to represent everyone equally and we realize campus is largely diverse not only with race, but with economic status, sexual orientation and political views,” she said. “We are the only non-partisan team running for office currently, and we are endorsed by both the UMass Democrats and UMass Republicans, which shows our universal consideration and support.”

Protzman has a great amount of respect for her partner and feels that they make a great team and would enhance the campus greatly.

“Derek and I want change. There have been overwhelming odds for anyone who stood up against the current party and now it’s time for Derek and I to change those odds,” she said. “Every student, no matter the color of their skin or their political affiliation, has a right to hold office and be a leader on campus.”

Confidence, Protzman admits, is something she cannot boast, because she feels pride is a great flaw.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming support of the student body and RSOs that have received Derek and I so well,” she said. “I believe we have more than a chance to win, but also a great chance to make a difference for UMass students.”
