Tennis loses at BC

The Massachusetts tennis team lost to Boston College, 7-0, in Chestnut Hill on Feb. 28 in what was a makeup meet at the Flynn Recreations Complex.

The meet was originally scheduled for Feb. 1, but had to be moved due to inclement weather at the time.

With the win over the Minutewomen, the Eagles move to 13-2 all-time against UMass – a rivalry which began in 1975. UMass has now lost four consecutive meets this season, and have not won since defeating Binghampton on Feb. 15 in Ithaca, N.Y.

The Minutewomen struggled in both singles and doubles against BC.

All four doubles pairings for UMass dropped its matches, while the Minutewomen also succumbed to the Eagles in each of the six singles matches.

The best match of the day was in No. 2 singles, where Candynce Boney dropped a close first set to Dasha Cherkasov, 7-6 (2), before falling, 6-0, in the second set.

Lana Krasnopolsky defeated senior co-captain Masha Pozar at the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-1. Other BC singles winners include No. 3 Lauren Cash, No. 4 Katherine Attwell, No. 5 Alison Wagner and No. 6 Alina Sullivan.

For the second time this season, the Minutewomen failed to score a point. Ivy League powerhouse Dartmouth posted a shutout against the Minutewomen on Feb. 20.

The Minutewomen have had a rough go of it as of late. Since the start of the spring season the Minutewomen have gone 2-6, which includes recent losses to non-conference opponents Army and Dartmouth.

If the Minutewomen hope to turn their fortunes around, they will have to avoid past history against their next opponent. Brown University currently holds a 13-0 all-time record over UMass since 1980. Brown, like Boston College, is one of UMass’s oldest rivalries.

After the upcoming meet against Brown, the Minutewomen have to continue their road-warrior status as only three of their remaining 11 meets are at home. As a young team the Minutewomen could use this experience as an upside when they play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament next month in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Minutewomen are back on the court this Friday against Brown in Providence, R.I., at 3 p.m.
