UMass student arrested for unarmed robbery and assault ‘ battery

Seth D. Steinberg, 20, of 171 East 84th Street New York, NY, was arrested early Tuesday morning at the Cumberland Farms located at 21 Montague Road.

Steinberg, a student at the University of Massachusetts has been charged with unarmed robbery, larceny, intimidation of a witness, and assault ‘ battery.

The investigation is ongoing

At 2:41 A.M. on Tuesday March 5, Amherst police responded to a 911 call from a Cumberland Farms clerk who said the store was being robbed.

Steinberg, a former employee of Cumberland Farms, attempted to hide his identity by tying a white T-shirt over his head. The clerk, a male whose name has not been released, reportedly walked to the back of the store and caught Steinberg taking money out of the store’s safe.

Steinberg attempted to run out of the store and a physical fight ensued. During the fight, the suspect attempted to swipe the clerk’s cell phone out of his hands which resulted in an intimidation charge. Neither the clerk nor Steinberg were injured.

Police were able to recover the stolen money stuffed into Steinberg’s shirt and pants. The amount of money has not been disclosed, but is confirmed to be more than $250.
