On Sunday afternoon, the Dayton women’s soccer team defeated Pennsylvania, 2-0, becoming the champions of the 2010 Penn Invitational Tournament.
The Flyers, the defending champions of the Atlantic 10 and the preseason favorite to repeat, improved to a 6-2 record with the win.
Dayton played evenly with the Quakers in the first half, with both teams registering five shots apiece. In the second half, however, the Flyers ran away with the game, holding an 11-2 advantage in shots.
Early in the second half, Dayton got on the board. In the 51st minute, a ball was served in from the left side and from the far post, freshman Juliana Libertin served the ball to Jerica DeWolfe. DeWolfe controlled the ball from about 12 yards out and fired a shot past Quaker goalkeeper Caroline Williams for her first goal of the season.
Sophomore Colleen Williams provided an insurance goal for the Flyers in the 75th minute from a corner kick by senior Kelly Blumenschein. Williams leads the team with 14 points, while the Flyers have won every time Williams has scored in a game so far this season.
Dayton stars Williams, Blumenschein, DeWolfe and Emily Kenyon were also named to the 2010 Penn Invitation All-Tournament Team.
Atlantic 10 names POW
Xavier’s Jessica Brooks and St. Bonaventure’s Courtney Hoenicke were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Brooks posted back-to-back two-goal games and finished the week with eight points as the Musketeers (4-3) defeated Mercer (3-1) and Western Carolina (2-1) in the Catamount Classic this past weekend.
The junior forward was responsible for four of the five goals scored by Xavier leading them to a share of the tournament title. With two wins over the weekend and four on the season, the Musketeers have already eclipsed last year’s win total and are off to the best start record-wise in school history since 1997.
Hoenicke helped lead the Bonnies to a pair of road victories this weekend, improving the team’s record to 4-3. The freshman defender was an imposing force on the Bonnies backline that limited the opposition to one goal on only four shots.
Hoenicke also registered the game-winning assist in a 1-0 victory over Colgate. Since becoming a starter, Hoenicke leads the Bonnies with a 3-1 record, posting two shutouts and allowing three goals.
Stenard leads 49ers over UNC Wilmington
On Saturday, Charlotte gutted out a double-overtime, come-from-behind victory over in-state rival UNC-Wilmington.
Four minutes into the second overtime period, senior Kirby Stenard scored her first goal of the season, collecting a rebound off a save by UNC goalie Chandler Follet and putting it away to seal the game for Charlotte.
The 49ers (4-2) struggled in the first half and went into halftime down 1-0. During the second half, Charlotte came out reenergized, notching the equalizer six minutes into the half. The 49ers continued to put pressure on the Seahawks defense, but they could not put in the go-ahead goal in regulation.
The first overtime was a defensive battle, with both teams combining for three shots on goal. Seniors Whitney Weinraub and Danielle Mayeaux both had good looks but could not put away the game in the first overtime. In the second overtime, the 49ers came out much more aggressive and won the game on Stenard’s goal.
The 49ers next two games will be played in Philadelphia, P.A. for the Villanova Classic, where they will play Towson on Friday and host the Wildcats on Sunday.
