Despite playing in front of their home crowd, the Russian men’s national team could not advance to the semifinals after being defeated by Finland 3-1.

Teemu Selanne’s goal found the back of the net less than three minutes into the game and powered Finland to victory.

Ilya Kovalchuk netted Russia’s only goal against Finland’s goalie Tuukka Rask, who finished the game with 37 saves.

Finland’s aggressive defensemen prevented Russians Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin from getting near the net.

Juhamatti Aaltonen and Mikael Granlund scored Finland’s other goals.

Finland will go on to face Sweden in the men’s hockey semifinals on Friday.

Sweden tops Slovenia for second shutout

After beating Austria 4-0, the Slovenia men’s hockey team didn’t take advantage of its momentum, as it lost 5-0 to Sweden on Wednesday.

Sweden’s goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 19 saves as he achieved his second shutout of the Olympic games.

Alex Steen immediately put Sweden on the board after a Slovenia penalty less than a minute into the game.

Sweden was held scoreless in the second period, but would end up scoring four times in the final period of the game.

Carl Hagelin scored Sweden’s final two goals of the third period, and Loui Eriksson and Daniel Sedin followed Hagelin’s lead, each adding a goal of their own.

Sweden will challenge Finland on Friday in the semifinals.

Joining Sweden and Finland in the semifinals will be the United States and Canada.

Ligety brings home gold in men’s alpine skiing

Ted Ligety took the gold in men’s alpine skiing for America after a 2:45:29 second run, which narrowly edged out Steve Missillier of France, who finished with a time of 2:45:77.

Alexis Pinturault took home the bronze medal for France.

Medal count update

As of Wednesday, Norway has won the most gold medals, with nine. The United States has won seven gold medals, five silvers and 11 bronze for a total of 23 medals.
