The following police logs are from the University of Massachusetts Police Department from Friday, April 19, 2019 to Sunday, April 21, 2019.

Friday, April 19, 2019

Larceny

3:37 p.m.: A laptop was reported missing and was presumed stolen. The staff at the Franklin Dining Commons did not have it in safekeeping. The party said at 4:27 p.m. that he had recovered his laptop and that he had found it along the pathway by Franklin.

Assist Citizen

3:50 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle said that he had struck an unknown vehicle at the traffic signal on Forestry Way around 2:30 on Friday. He did not realize the damage until he arrived in Springfield. Both vehicles were moving. The damage was buffed out of the reporting party’s vehicle, but the damage to the other vehicle is unknown. The reporting party said he would stop at his earliest convenience to report it.

4:38 p.m.:  A reporting party advised that he left his iPad in a room of the Lederle Research Tower on North Pleasant Street. He advised that he is back at his home in Waltham and is unable to come back at the time. He advised that the iPad should be on the AV cart in the room. An officer advised that he removed the iPad from the room. The reporting party was contacted and advised that the iPad was recovered. He said that he will not be back on campus until April 26 and left a voicemail so that he could make plans to pick up the iPad.

Traffic Stop

4:30 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation at the Whitmore Administration Building on Massachusetts Avenue.

5:07 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation on Presidents Drive.

5:30 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation at the Studio Arts Building on Thatcher Road.

5:38 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a brake light on Eastman Lane.

7:47 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating a vehicle without headlights at Lot 25 North on Commonwealth Avenue.

9:20 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a marked lanes violation and operating a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt on North Pleasant Street.

Traffic Enforcement

4:33 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a plate display violation on University Drive.

8:30 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating a vehicle without headlights on University Drive.

Lost/Found Property

4:33 p.m.: The key to an office at the Lederle Research Tower on North Pleasant Street was lost and a call number was provided.

7:26 p.m.: A u-card was found and brought to the station.

8:49 p.m.: A reporting party stated that he had left behind his cell phone at the Fine Arts Center on Presidents Drive while using the restroom. The phone was located in Herter, and a voicemail was left for the owner. The owner retrieved the phone at 10:31 p.m.

Alarm-Fire 

4:48 p.m.: An accidental/defective fire alarm went off at the Lincoln Apartments Building 5 on Lincoln Avenue. Fire engine 1 and Amherst Fire Department were notified and fire engine 1 reset the alarm.

Parking Complaint

5:00 p.m.: A vehicle was issued a parking ticketed at Southwest Circle. Five other vehicles moved.

Suspicious Person/Activity 

5:58 p.m.: A reporting party states that a male party “got up in her face” and made her feel unsafe at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library on Hicks Way. The male party is now gone, but the reporting party stated she would like to speak to an officer. The male party was described as white and “rugged” looking with a bald head, glasses and a short muscular build. No threats were made. An officer went to Greenough to speak with the involved male, but no contact was made. A card was left at the room for contact.

Alarm-Fire Trouble

7:52 p.m.: An accidental/defective alarm went off at the Lederle Graduate Research Center Tower on North Pleasant Street. Fire engine 1 was notified and the alarm was referred to techs.

Traffic Stop

12:18 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating a vehicle without headlights on the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Butterfield Terrace.

12:55 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating a vehicle without headlights on University Drive.

1:34 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a defective plate light at Sylvan Residential Area on Eastman Lane.

2:45 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding by the Design Building on North Pleasant Street.

5:45 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning near Lot 21 on Access Road for a defective brake light.

9:02 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue for not having their headlights on.

11:29 p.m.: A traffic warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle by Lot 32 on Lincoln Avenue and verbal warnings were issued to both passengers for not wearing seatbelts.

11:32 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on North Pleasant Street and Phillips Street for operating without headlights.

11:42 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle near the Recreation Center on Commonwealth Avenue for operating without headlights.

11:59 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle by Lot 71 on Massachusetts Avenue was stopped and issued a verbal warning for defective headlights.

Intoxicated Person

1:30 a.m.: A party was found intoxicated outside of John Quincy Adams Dorm on Fearing Street. The party did not meet protective custody criteria.

Suspicious Person/Activity

3:00 a.m.: An officer was passing by the Herter Annex Lobby and saw a male party sitting on one of the chairs. The officer made contact with the individual and recognized the party from past building checks as the building’s maintainer.

8:35 p.m.: A reporting party stated a male party was in the reception area of an office working on his laptop and she did not believe he belong in the office.

8:46 p.m.: A reporting party stated an older man with gray hair in a wheelchair appeared to be unconscious, but breathing on Massachusetts Avenue. When an officer asked her to speak loudly to the man, he woke up and began wheeling away. He said he was just taking a break on his way to the shelter.

Alarm-Fire Trouble

8:19 a.m.: An accidental/defective alarm went off at North Residential Building A on Eastman Lane. Fire engine 1 was on scene and stated that there is a problem with the circuit speaker. Simplex was notified.

11:16 a.m.: An accidental/defective alarm went off at the W.E.B. Du Boise Library on Hicks Way. Fire engine 1 was on scene, and the alarm was referred to techs.

9:18 p.m.: Fire engine 1 was notified after an accidental/defective alarm went off in the Computer Science Research Center on Governors Drive.

10:48 p.m.: Fire engine 1 was notified when an accidental/defective alarm went off in Hampshire Dining Commons.

10:48 p.m.: An accidental/defective alarm sounded in Prince Dorm on Sunset Avenue. Fire engine 1 was notified.

Lost/Found Property

8:56 a.m.: An officer stated that a UMPD traffic cone was found on Belchertown Road and that he will be returning the property to the station.

9:31 a.m.: An officer stated that he found a Physical Plant cone in a room of Mackimmie Dorm on Sunset Avenue. The cone will be returned to the Physical plant.

Breaking and Entering/Burglary

10:28 a.m.: A laptop and rug were reported stolen from a dorm room in Washington Dorm on Fearing Street. The room was left unsecure.

Alarm-(Prefire)

 11:12 a.m.: A pre-alarm went off at Lewis Dorm on Thatcher Road. Fire engine 1 was sent to the scene and stated the alarm was due to cooking without an exhaust fan.

7:54 p.m.: A pre-fire alarm went off in Lewis Dorm on Thatcher Road. Fire engine 1 was notified.

Traffic Enforcement

12:04 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a stop sign violation on Massachusetts Avenue.

4:20 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield on University Drive. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an expired registration on University Drive. The registration was renewed roadside.

Parking Complaint

12:15 p.m.: Five parking tickets were issued at Southwest Circle.

2:00 p.m.: An EMT stated that there is a vehicle parked in the corner of Garber Field making it difficult for a bus to turn around. The EMT called back and said the subject moved the vehicle.

2:08 p.m.: Four parking tickets were issued in Lot 42 (south of Boyden Gym) on Commonwealth Avenue.

4:05 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to an operator for a parking violation. The vehicle was moved.

9:35: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle in the Southwest Circle.

Assist Agency 

12:31 a.m.: The Amherst Police Department called and stated that one of their officers is speaking to a male subject that was involved in an altercation in their town. APD stated the officer is all set.

Suspicious Vehicle

4:39 p.m.: A vehicle on Venture Way was parked in the fire lane.

8:27 p.m.: A vehicle was parked on Presidents Drive. An officer spoke to those inside of the vehicle and the situation was “all set.”

10:13 p.m.: An incident report was completed for a suspicious vehicle in Lot 50F (west of Patterson Hall, south of John Adams Tower) in the Southwest Residential Area.

Larceny

7:51 p.m.: A reporting party states she left a package of toilet paper in the lobby of North Apartment C on Eastman Lane before returning to her vehicle to park it. When she returned to the lobby, the toilet paper was gone.

911 Hang-up Call

8:35 p.m.: A call from Lot 13A on Olympia Drive came in, however, no voices were heard. An officer was in the area and said the help phone was loud and clear, but no one was in the area.

 

Sunday, April 21, 2019 

Traffic Stop

12:21 a.m.: A 21-year-old female from Chelmsford, Mass. was issued a summons for arrest for the operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. Ernie’s Towing was called and impounded the vehicle from Thatcher Road and Clark Hill Road.

1:01 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operation of a vehicle on Commonwealth Avenue for failing to stop.

1:20 a.m.: A traffic citation was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Governors Drive.

3:58 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle on Governors Drive was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights and a one way violation.

4:02 a.m.: A vehicle on E. Pleasant Street was stopped and the operators was issued a verbal warning for failing to stop.

9:53 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Ave for texting and driving.

Suspicious Person/Activity

12:32 a.m.: An officer investigated the Orchard Hill Bowl on Orchard Hill Drive. All parties “check ok.”

Suspicious Vehicle

12:45 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle on University Drive and Massachusetts Avenue was lost and looking of directions. An officer provided directions and the party was sent on their way.

Traffic Enforcement

1:25 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was stopped on Governors Drive near N. Pleasant Street and issued a verbal warning for speeding.

Intoxicated Person

1:37 a.m.: An intoxicated male party on the second floor of a residential hall on Infirmary Way near the stairwell was reported. The male was returned home.

2:51 a.m.: An intoxicated person in Wheeler Dorm in Central Residential Area on Infirmary Way was removed from the building and sent to the hospital.

3:49 a.m.: An intoxicated person in John Quincy Adams Tower in Southwest Residential Area on Fearing Street was removed from the building and sent to the hospital.

Alarm-Fire

10:22 a.m.: Environmental Health and Safety and the Amherst Fire Department were notified after an alarm was activated in Lincoln Apartments Building 2 on Lincoln Avenue due to cooking. AFD arrived at the scene.

911 Hang-up Call

12:45 p.m.: The help phone outside of the Studio Arts Building on Thatcher Road was activated, but no one was in the area.
