The third and final installment of the Mullins Center’s recent string of DJ performances stormed the University of Massachusetts campus on Tuesday. Netherlands native Afrojack brought his turntables, lights and effects to help the campus welcome Halloween week. Prior to Afrojack, UMass’ massive arena venue had also welcomed both DJ Tiësto and Deadmau5 with healthy turnouts.
Upon the opening of the Mullins Center’s doors, local DJ Bugra Akaktan (under the name of Bamboora) took to the stage. The often outlandishly costumed members of the crowd slowly filled the general admission area.
Even as time ticked away during the open acts, fans seemed to maintain an excited rush. The second opener of the night, Quintino, played a set that lasted over an hour. Fans continued to congregate on the floor during his set, gradually building a sea of bodies.
As Quintino played, he welcomed female dancers wearing a variety of Halloween costumes to dance. He also engaged the audience by encouraging these dancers to throw balloon pumpkins into the audience.
Around 11 p.m., headliner Afrojack finally took to the stage. Spinning mainly his own mixes with a plethora of different sound effects, Afrojack was thoroughly and actively involved in his set. While keeping two hands on the turntables, he still managed to move around and appear to be having a great time. Though he generally mixed his own sounds Tuesday night, he also threw in a few popular tunes including Martin Solveig’s recent smash hit “Hello” and one of Beyoncé’s latest singles “Run the World (Girls).” Early on in his set, Afrojack also played a concert-ready version of his Billboard hit “Take Over Control,” which threw the audience into a strobe light-fueled frenzy.
With house beats blasting for a marathon duration of five hours, the crowd surprisingly kept its energy high – jumping, dancing and fist-pumping throughout the entire night. Event staff thankfully supplied bottled water to the active crowd.
The Afrojack stage was also decorated to match the attendees, many of whom attended in costume. A series of jack-o-lanterns spelling out the headliner’s stage name lined the edge of the stage, while the rest was adorned in life-sized grim reapers and ghosts alongside massive cats with glowing orange eyes.
All three of the DJs featured amplified and unique visual effects projected upon a large backdrop in addition to a screen on the front of the DJ table. In true Halloween spirit, scenes from classic horror films such as “The Shining” were projected. Skulls, fire and blood also flashed continuously on the screen to add to the spooky, sensory effect. Not only were creepy and sinister images projected, a series of lights and computer generated images were shown as well. Periodically, scenes of the exuberant crowd would also flash upon the projector.
Afrojack bids farewell to UMass and moves on to the next stop on his tour in Miami.
