The University of Massachusetts has cancelled all classes Monday because of the rare October snowstorm that struck the region over the weekend.

“We don’t want people coming in by requirement when there are power lines down,” said UMass spokesman Ed Blaguszewski in a phone interview Sunday night.

“We thought it was wise and prudent to close [Monday] and get a sense of where things stand in terms of recovery,” he added.

The number of power outages in the surrounding area and limited services offered by the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority were contributing factors in the decision to shut down much of the campus, Blaguszewski noted.

Some services, however, will remain available to students Monday. All dining halls will be open during their normal operational hours, according to Blaguszewski. The recreation center on campus, though, will be closed. And while the library was slated to be open, it too was closed.
