In an effort to better understand Massachusetts’ fisheries, the University of Massachusetts in conjunction with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries
will reopen a shared marine research science center, according to a University press release. The research will focus on Bluefin tuna and lobster as well as other large species.
The UMass Amherst Gloucester Marine Science Research Station, situated on Hodgkins Cove, recently underwent a $400,000 renovation. Research professor Molly Lutcavage, who will introduce the facility at the press conference there Friday, will work at the facility.
At the research station, scientists will work to assess fish behaviors as well as analyze the size and health of fishery stocks that are relevant to the Massachusetts economy, according to the release. Last year, over 282 million pounds of seafood was landed on the decks of fishermen, said the release. In addition to the market value of the fish, the industry also attracts tourists helping to support food, lodging and gas.
