The Massachusetts women’s rugby team scored twice in the first 15 minutes of Saturday’s game against Northeastern and never looked back, as the Minutewomen cruised to a 30-5 victory at home.
The scorers for the Minutewomen included Shannon Cunningham, Kelli Livingston, Emily Stone, Shay Tierney and Amanda Schiller.
The Maddogs’ only score came 15 minutes into the contest.
Meanwhile, UMass scored twice more in the first half to take a 20-5 lead into halftime.
In an effort to score in the second half, the Minutewomen showcased one of their classic plays called the “Maul.”
During a maul the players drive forward continuously in a crowded group to discourage the opponent from infiltrating the mob towards the ball. UMass repeated this play all the way down the field until the team scored, resulting in its first try of the second half.
The Minutewomen completed a series of successful scrums throughout the contest as well as a series of competitive line-outs.
With only a few minutes left in the game, UMass scored one more time. However, the Minutewomen failed to convert on any of their kicks throughout the game.
There was a series of penalties and injuries during the game, but it did not slow down UMass in the end.
