BC picks up first win in blowout in Hockey East action

Seven different players scored goals as No. 4 Boston College picked up its first win of the season at home on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over No. 15 Rensselaer.

Forward Johnny Gaudreau got three points for the Eagles (1-1). Freshman goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 25 of 27 shots in net.

RPI (1-1) was shorthanded just 1:11 into the first, and the Eagles capitalized. Gaudreau set up Kevin Hayes on the power play as BC took a 1-0 lead. The Engineers overcame the early goal and stayed close from that point on, and only trailed 3-2 about halfway through the contest. But the Eagles’ offensive pressure was too much, as they tacked on a goal late in the second and three more in the third to turn the contest into a rout.

Hayes and Bill Arnold each chipped in a goal and two assists for Boston College.

The Eagles return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. when they host Wisconsin.

New Hampshire falls to Minnesota

No. 12 New Hampshire had a lead midway through the second period, but could not hold on as No. 5 Minnesota rallied for a 3-2 win Saturday night at home.

Justin Holl and Hudson Fasching led the way for the Golden Gophers (2-0) with two points apiece, as the Gophers won the 17th-annual Ice Breaker tournament, a four-team round robin to kick off the college hockey season.

UNH’s (1-1) Eric Knodel and Nick Sorkin each scored on the power play in the second period, with both coming from assists by defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk. But that was all that the Wildcats would get in the pivotal second period, as they were outshot 14-3 in the crucial stanza that saw all five goals in the game scored.

The Wildcats beat Clarkson, 4-1, in the first round of the tournament to advance to the championship game. They host Michigan next weekend for contests on Friday and Saturday night, with start times of 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

Notre Dame tops Western Michigan

No. 4 Notre Dame completed its sweep of a home-and-home series with Western Michigan as it went on the road and won, 3-0.

Senior goalie Steve Summerhays recorded his second shutout of the weekend, as he stopped 22 shots for the Irish.

Notre Dame came out of the locker room in the second period and dominated. Despite just one goal from Thomas DiPauli, the Irish outshot Western Michigan 20-1 in the frame and established their dominance. They scored again less than a minute into the third period to take a 2-0 lead, and an empty netter provided the final tally. Shayne Taker led the Notre Dame offense with two assists, his third and fourth of the year.

The Irish will take over a week off and will not return to action until Sunday when they host Michigan Tech at 2:05 p.m.
