A University of Massachusetts student died in Chicopee on Wednesday, according to MassLive.com.
Vyacheslav Yanyuk, 21, of Chicopee, was a senior at UMass and planned to graduate this spring with a degree in microbiology and a minor in philosophy, according to MassLive.com.
As of Sunday evening, the University had not released a statement about Yanyuk’s death to the campus community.
The official cause of death has not yet been released.
Yanyuk was pursuing a career in the medical field and hoped to become a neurosurgeon, according to MassLive.com. He worked as a student volunteer firefighter for the Amherst Fire Department and conducted scientific research for the Tew group at UMass.
According to MassLive.com, he also worked as an EMT for the National Ambulance Service, volunteered in the emergency room at Baystate Medical Center and was a lifeguard at the Chicopee State Park.
Yanyuk graduated from Chicopee Comprehensive High School in 2010. He is survived by his parents, Alla and Aleksandr Yanyuk.
