The Massachusetts football team has made a series of internal coaching changes according to head coach Mark Whipple in a Tuesday press release, as assistant coaches Liam Coen and Spencer Whipple were promoted to co-passing game coordinators while Steve Costello was named the new tight ends coach.
Mike Cassano, who served as the team’s passing game coordinator last season, has left the team for personal, undisclosed reasons.
Coen will continue to coach the quarterbacks while Spencer Whipple will focus his attention on the wide receivers after coaching the tight ends in 2014. Costello worked with the wide receivers last year as a graduate assistant coach.
“Liam and Spencer have both done an outstanding job and will continue to do so as will Steve,” Mark Whipple said in the release.
The Minutemen led the Mid-American Conference last season in total passing yards (3,741), which ranked 19th nationally in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Quarterback Blake Frohnapfel was named to the preseason All-MAC first team and was among the nation’s leading passers before an injury sidelined him for the final two games last year.
Costello was a defensive back for UMass from 2001-05 and was named as a graduate assistant in the 2014 spring semester. His 12 career interceptions ranks 10th in program history.
The Minutemen open their season at Colorado on Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
