A University of Massachusetts student died Friday morning after falling from a fourth-story window at the Hasbrouck Laboratory building, according to UMass Police.
James Tilley, a senior from Windham, New Hampshire, died at the scene shortly before 2 a.m. The campus community received an email from David Vaillancourt, senior associate dean of students, informing it of Tilley’s death.
According to the email, Tilley was a member of the Commonwealth Honors College and majored in physics while also minoring in math. He also served as a tutor and was a member of the Society of Physics Students.
“We extend our sincere condolences to James’ family and friends,” Vaillancourt wrote.

James Tilley posthumously graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics Magna Cum Laude. He was also named a Commonwealth Honors College Scholar with Greatest Distinction. He had previously received the Hasbrouck Scholarship Award for academic excellence in physics.
