Cold weather is coming. Or well, it already came. So for those of you, who don’t like that freezing feeling recent power outages have given you, warm up with coffee and hot chocolate. But of course, we’re college students. So, don’t just settle for average hot chocolate; spice up a collegiate and childhood favorite with a variety of alcoholic additions. These delicious drinks range in taste and style, but are sure to heat up those frosty nights.
Adult Hot Chocolate
Who didn’t love warming up with hot chocolate after playing outside for hours in the snow? The premise is the same, but with a different kick. Make hot chocolate and add one and half ounces of peppermint Schnapps. Top with whipped cream for a minty, tasty beverage.
Wooley Mitten
Forget alcohol jackets to keep warm, put on some alcohol mittens this winter! Fill half a mug with hot chocolate. Add one and a half ounces of Southern Comfort, an ounce of peppermint Schnapps and one and a half ounces of Bailey’s Irish Cream. Again, top with whipped cream and serve piping hot for a drink that will surely keep your insides feeling fuzzy and your hands nice and toasty.
Snow Bunny
If frolicking through the snow is a favorite winter pastime, this drink is a perfect match. Follow the recipe to Adult Hot Chocolate, but just add Triple Sec to your hot chocolate.
Skier’s Toddy
Mix three quarters of an ounce Kahlua with hot chocolate. For extra flavor and strength, add in splashes of Crème de Cacao and Tia Maria.
Roman Coffee
For a classic cocktail, try this coffee variation. Wipe lemon juice around the sides of the glass. Add sugar into the glass, but be sure to add enough to cover the entire inside of the glass. Add an ounce of Galliano, which will caramelize the sugar. Pour in black coffee and top with whipped cream, cinnamon and nutmeg to enjoy a delicious drink with a lot of flavor!
Oatmeal Cookie Hot Chocolate
To appease the sweet tooth, try this concoction. Mix together one third of a shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream, one third of a shot of butterscotch Schnapps and one third of a shot of cinnamon Schnapps. Top with hot chocolate and whipped cream. Add chocolate shavings for extra flavor.
Hot Peppermint Patty
If the Oatmeal Cookie Hot Chocolate didn’t quite satisfy the sweet tooth, this recipe surely will. Mix a half ounce of dark Crème de Cacao and a tablespoon of peppermint Schnapps. Add hot chocolate and top with green crème de menthe for an extra bite.
Comforting Coffee
For those days when it is a better idea to stay in your pajamas watching movies and the snow fall with roommates instead of attending class, this coffee cocktail will make your snow day even better. Mix an ounce of bourbon, two teaspoons of crème de cacao and an ounce of Southern Comfort with coffee and cream, to taste. Top with cocoa powder for decoration.
Butterbeer
For those who like to curl up and watch or read Harry Potter on those blustery and snowy evenings, they can now feel like a part in the movie by making their own Butterbeer. Melt butter and honey. When melted, add one and a half cup of milk, one teaspoon of vanilla extract, and one ounce of butterscotch Schnapps. Heat the mixture in the microwave and mix in hot chocolate powder and one teaspoon of cinnamon. Drink enough and you’ll probably start feeling pretty magical.
Jungle Coffee
Looking to get in touch with your wild side on these cold evenings? Try this mixture to feel like you’re living in the Amazon. Mix a half ounce of Brandy, a half ounce of dark Crème de Cacao, a half ounce of banana Liqueur and a half ounce of Southern Comfort. Top with coffee and use a spoon to layer cream on top of the concoction. Go bananas drinking this one!
