UMass Fashionistas: Bringing big city chic to college with Delia Barth

Lil James-Crook/Collegian

Among the swarm of support for University of Massachusetts spirit attire, and comfy, casual college wear, Delia Barth made her way through the Southwest Resident Area of campus with her effortless chic style.

Barth stood out from the crowd as she paired a bright coral blazer from the popular chain store H&M, with a vintage Chanel scarf from her favorite thrift store in New York City for a bargain of $6.

Treasuring her basics – tank tops and skinny jeans – the communications major wore a navy cami and jeans, both from Forever 21 as the foundation of her outfit; teaming these staple items with unique accessories such as her charity shop loafers and a Vera Pelle Italian leather bag.

Spending her summer and school breaks in the West Village of New York City, Barth has gathered her inspiration from the bohemian lifestyle that the Village oozes, while avidly reading fashion blogs to gain ideas for her next outfits.

Many girls have a prized possession in their wardrobe that they couldn’t bear to live without, such as a unique purchase or maybe just a great fitting pair of jeans.

Barth can identify with this idea, describing her most precious item as the Chanel silk scarf pictured in the photograph, which she purchased along with other discounted designer items – picking them for their authenticity and individuality.

Barth overcomes the fashion struggle of standing out on such a large campus by indulging in daring colors and arranging them with interesting accessories such as her turquoise and silver earrings purchased from downtown Amherst.

Akin to her muses, the British fashion icon, Alexa Chung and the infamous, alternative Olsen twins, this fashionista manages to portray casual elegance with her rouge lipstick and hair in a simple, yet neat ballet style bun, as though she was walking through the streets of London or Paris instead of walking to class.

This trendy student stood out in this arbitrarily autumnal weather in which some days call for a chunky knit sweater and the next day calls for shorts and a t-shirt. She remained stylish yet practical.

To achieve this look without the quirky boutiques that a big city has to offer, simply pair new and old items together, choosing fail-safe staples from H&M, Forever 21 or your preferred shops and match them with elegant and unique jewelry, scarves, hats or bags to create a polished but casual look as Barth does.

She gets it just right by teaming vintage pieces with essentials to create a city look in a small college town.

I think she definitely has ‘The Look.’

I’m always amazed what you can find in a thrift store. And for that hip look, concentrate on those vintage accessories.

    Good job!
