The Amherst Police Department is currently investigating an alleged off-campus armed robbery that took place Friday in the area of Brandywine Apartments, located off of Meadow Street in Amherst.
The news was released to the University of Massachusetts campus community through a UMass crime alert email, which alleged that the perpetrator had a gun. However, that information was unconfirmed, the email said.
The Amherst Police Department is being assisted in its investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the UMass Police Department.
UMass spokesperson Ed Blaguszewski commented that the University will stay informed concerning updates in the case due to the crime’s location.
“It’s our concern because we have a lot of students who live in that apartment complex,” he said, adding that the University wants to ensure the safety of its students, both on and off campus.
According to the email, “at this time there is no reason to believe that an imminent risk exists for (the) community, and police are actively patrolling (the) area.”
Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact the Amherst Police Department at 413-259-3000.
The Amherst Police Department declined to comment further on the case.
