The Massachusetts Daily Collegian suffered a devastating loss last week with the tragic passing of Lynus Erickson. Lynus was the head photo editor at the Collegian for the 2021-22 year, and he was a friend to many of us. He was a talented photographer and a joy to be around. Lynus was always willing to learn and improve and always had a smile on his face. Those who knew him will remember his kindness, his sense of humor and his passion for his work.

Lynus worked as an assistant editor with the photography team from Fall 2019-Spring 2021, when he was hired as head photo editor. During his time at the Collegian, he covered a wide range of events, from sports to paint nights. The following is a gallery showcasing just some of his work. A collection of his Collegian photos can be found here.

Lynus was a remarkable person, and he will truly be missed by all of us at the Collegian. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family.

There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why someone this young is taken away. Both my parents died in their 90’s and both simply went to sleep and didn’t wake up. I wish I had the right words to say in a situation like this, but I don’t because I don’t understand it anymore than any of you. To his family, friends, and colleagues, I will be thinking of you and asking whatever divinity exists to grant you some semblance of peace because these things are beyond our control. May the memories of Lynus bring you a smile that he lived and was doing what he wanted and that his life is more than how it ended. It was the quality of how he lived!

Lynus took a class with me and was a lot of fun and a good student. It was in the Spring 2020 semester, so we all had to adjust from being in-person to being on Zoom, and Lynus was always a good sport about my difficulties with the transition. He was a lovely guy. I’m so sorry for his family and friends.
