The University of Massachusetts informed students that Katherine Andreevna Boukharov had passed away via an email sent on Thursday afternoon. The email came from Dean of Students Evelyn L. Ashley.

Boukharov was studying cognitive science through BDIC and was from Melrose. Her obituary stated that she died on June 13 “while vacationing in the Florida Keys.”

Her obituary also said that she founded the Disability Culture Club at UMass: “She worked tirelessly to create a safe and inclusive environment where students with disabilities and their allies could together celebrate the diversity of human experience.”

The email encouraged students affected by this loss to seek support. “During this difficult time, I urge you to reach out for assistance, or to direct others as appropriate.” It also included resources for students, including Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, Dean of Students Office and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.

“We extend our sincere condolences to Katherine’s family and friends,” reads the email.
