Unpredictable is the perfect description of this month’s weather. This creates a fashion problem. How do UMass students remain stylish and warm? Phoebe Vigor, a sophomore student spending a semester abroad here from her native London, mastered this with just a few simple pieces.
What is admirable about her ensemble is how she used the flowy feminine floral skirt and chiffon-textured sweater to create a warm and effortless chic look. This gave her the appearance of an H&M ad or an ensemble from a Top Shop collection. Adding a simple braid gave the ensemble elegant poise.
Vigor dresses according to her mood, though she takes her influence from icons, like Edie Sedgwick. What she called “charity shops” or thrift stores are also a personal favorite. Vigor chooses anything comfortable, light and not too tight, which is a fashion mantra she lives by. Oversized anything offers fluid movement, while a pair of skinny jeans gives her style a personal touch.
It was an interesting take amidst all the hip hugging, skin tight and revealing clothing made popular for warmer seasons. More clothing and less skin seems conservative, but is often more appealing, even on the runway. The term “effortless” cannot be emphasized enough when talking about the style of Phoebe Vigor. She calls it a “mix match” of items that she puts together and reflects a sense of style that isn’t taxing or too put together. Yes we love Lady GaGa, but we can also cherish style like Phoebe Vigor’s that is free-spirited and simple.
