An addendum. The parties today are different in another way. They’re so huge. I guess that’s because in the 90s we couldn’t invite 1000 or more friends through social media in a matter of seconds. The size of the crowds might discourage individuals from dispersing. Maybe it’s easy to think the cops will get someone else, not you, when there’s hundreds of people around you. I’m still struck by how many people in those videos just didn’t move and somehow thought they’d get away with throwing bottles at police. Maybe it’s an attitude problem and/or it’s a problem of crowd thinking. People have been drinking at UMass and other colleges for decades. Someone’s got to address the new behaviors and investigate why they are happening.

I’ve been watching the many videos of the “Blarney Blowout” on YouTube, and I’m struck by two things. The parties look just like the ones that I knew at UMass in the ’90s. However, back in the ’90s when the cops showed up we dispersed by running away as fast as we could. The people on the videos resisted the police and some made at best a minimal effort to leave the scene. I guess it’s no accident that many of them were arrested for not dispersing. Given how many other videos I can find on the web of other instances in which UMass students didn’t disperse when the police came to break up a party, I’m not surprised that the police used force to thin the crowd in the most recent incident.
So, what’s going on with UMass students–and their out-of-town friends–and their sense that they have a right to disturb the peace, hold unauthorized gatherings of hundreds of people, and ignore the authority of the law? We never showed that kind of hubris. We didn’t think we were that special, I guess. We didn’t think we were above the law. Why the change? If I were the chancellor, I’d be looking into that attitude change.
